Winter White Hamster
Winter White Hamsters as Pets
Introduction to Winter White Hamsters
Winter Whites originate from Siberia & parts of Kazakhstan (that is why they are occasionally called the Siberian Hamster). In the wild Winter White Hamsters live in family groups & colony’s, and indeed in captivity this species can live with their own species or with Campbells hamsters. However owners should be aware that fighting can occur sometimes, as in the confinements of a tank or cage the animals are unable to escape from any cage mate they fall out with. When squabbles turn into serious fighting you will need to separate them before serious injuries occur. Winter Whites can be vocal, squawking and squeaking when either arguing with cage mates or when frightened by humans.
Winter Whites hamsters come in three main varieties:
Winter White Breeding
Life Span – They live to about 2 years+ When kept in captivity. In the wild they tend to only live about a year.
Sexual maturity – Males and females are able to mate at around 4 – 5 weeks
Gestation – 18 -21 days is the norm but Dwarf Hamsters have the ability to delay their pregnancy if feel threatened or uncomfortable.
Litter Size – The average size of their litter is 4 – 6. They have been known to have 10 babies although they tend not to all survive.
